CDN Ecosystem Diagram 8

Bizety is publishing the 8th version of the CDN Ecosystem Diagram. This one incorporates the latest updates to the ecosystem over the last several days. Saguna Networks has been added to the diagram, and the European CDN Ecosystem has its own section now. The purpose of the diagram is to illustrate where each CDN stands in relation to one another. After much thought, Limelight Networks has been grouped together with Level 3. Limelight, Level 3, Akamai and EdgeCast are the big four Media Delivery Service (MDS) CDN players, catering to companies delivering linear and non-linear video.

The linear segment includes broadcasters, TV stations, and of professional film-makers that push their content out to Internet audiences. With that in mind, any start-up CDN that want’s to bet its future by strictly focusing on the Media Delivery Services segment needs to think twice about it, because the big four are going to be extremely tough to beat on price, functionality, and experience. Those CDNs are better off focusing on other areas, and offering MDS as a feature in the product portfolio. The diagram is not perfect, but it works well.

 Ecosystem Updates
  • European CDN Ecosystem has its own category
  • Saguna Networks has been added to ecosystem
  • Limelight joins Level 3, Akamai and EdgeCast in the MDS segment
  • Ooyala and ThePlatform has been added back to the OVP category
