Webscale Closes $14M Round in Series B

Webscale, the Sunnyvale startup has just raised $14M, bringing the total raised to $32M. The Digital Cloud Company, as they refer themselves to helps online retailers and digital brands secure, scale, and automate the operations of online storefronts. Webscale is experiencing 100% YoY growth and currently power 1,000+ storefronts. Although they are focused on the mid-market, they have expanded to the enterprise and now count six Fortune 1000 companies as clients, including Unilever, Puma, Hanes, Tommy Hilfiger, and more. With the new funding, the company plans to grow the sales and marketing staff, and invest in developing more features.

Competitive Landscape Overview

Under the hood, part of the Webscale technology stack resembles that of a CDN. That part of the stack includes web application delivery, content delivery, load balancing, web application firewall, bot mitigation, DDoS protection, and image manager, all which run on multi-cloud. The other part of the stack is an ecosystem of tools in the areas of orchestration, predictive scaling, and automation that simplifies the process of migrating, provisioning, configuring, and operating storefronts on multi-cloud environments. The entire stack is software-defined with a control plane that acts as the brains of the operation and is clearly the technology that separates Webscale from other providers including CDNs.

In addition, the Webscale team has developed vertical expertise in operating platforms like Magento, WordPress, WooCommerce, and so on. They are the Shopify of the enterprise with two key differences: 1) Webscale supports any 3rd party application unlike Shopify and 2) Webscale doesn’t charge customers a transaction fee on each sale. Another differentiator, they have developed a strong partnership program, working closely with digital agencies and the consultant community that specialize in supporting platforms like Magento, and WooCommerce.
